European Union and Competition law

 

In the field of EU & Competition law, Alexandros concentrates on anti-trust litigation and concentrations of undertakings of major importance. Alexandros has also worked and advised on various regulatory frameworks arising from EU law, such as environmental regulation, agricultural law, product safety, internet regulation, electronic communications, customs, food safety, as well as trade in dual-use products. He was also part of a legal team that successfully represented two companies from the dairy industry in proceedings before the Cyprus Commission for the Protection of Competition, relating to allegations of unfair terms, arbitrary price increases, vertical foreclosure and more. Alexandros has have further assisted, among others, a commercial bank in anti-trust proceedings before the Commission in relation to practices concerning card interchange fees and represented a foreign car manufacturer in connection with practices in the market for original spare parts. He has been further involved in anti-trust investigations in the animal waste processing market. In addition, Alexandros has been part of a legal team that represented before the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, a large group of natural and legal persons that were depositors, shareholders and bondholders of the ex-Laiki Bank and the Bank of Cyprus, concerning the imposed diminution of the bank’s assets pursuant to the 2013 bail-in measures. Alexandros is further recommended as a Rising Star in EU & Competition Law for Cyprus by The Legal 500 EMEA for 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

 

Employment law

 

Examples of Alexandros's employment law work include, (i) advising the managers of the consortium that won the tender for the award of concession of the container terminal of the Port of Limassol, (ii) advising the operator of the marine services terminal of the same port, (iii) assisting international providers of information technology in relation to their appointment procedures and employment contracts (iv) reviewing several employment issues emanating from a multi-million euro acquisition of a Cypriot company by a multinational pharmaceutical company, (v) advising on three different collective redundancy processes in the wider hospitality industry during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, (vi) providing regular information and support to clients concerning government-subsidised employment support schemes during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic, (vii) advising on the process of separation and divestment of operations of one of the largest global information, data and market measurement firms, and the pertinent transfer of undertakings, and many more. He has further helped one of Britain’s big four banks with employment issues arising from the closure of their Cyprus branch, and other foreign banks based in Cyprus on matters such as downsizing of their local branch. He has further assisted with the restructuring of the Cyprus subsidiary of one of Ireland’s largest airport and retail holding and management companies, operating the concession of retail shops in the two main commercial airports of the Republic of Cyprus. Alexandros has also been the regular long-term legal advisor of companies in a number of industries such as construction, digital commerce, investment trading, hospitality, beverages, logistics, shipping and finance, concerning all aspects of employment law, including appointments, terminations, transfers of undertakings, restructurings and collecting bargaining. Alexandros is also recommended as a Rising Star in Employment Law for Cyprus by The Legal 500 EMEA for 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, he is a member of the European Employment Lawyers Association and has attended a number of conferences during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic physically and online as a regular speaker on matters pertaining to remote work and its implications, proposed regulation of such new forms of work, as well as on matters of mandatory vaccinations and collection of health data.

Past work

 

Between 2014 and 2024, Alexandros worked as an Associate, and later as a Senior Associate at a Tier 1 full service commercial law firm in Nicosia, after completing his one-year traineeship with the same firm. He coordinated later the firm’s EU law, employment law and immigration law practice teams, but was further involved in corporate law matters and had experience in the review of corporate documents and the provision of legal opinions thereon. Alexandros has further assisted with the preparation and review of court applications, written pleadings for annulment of administrative acts and public procurement cases.

 

Aside from his work as a qualified Advocate in Cyprus, Alexandros has also worked in the human rights field as an international advocacy assistant before UN institutions for a civil society organisation in Switzerland, as well as worked in international criminal law research at an academic institution in the Netherlands.
